Heyo! My name is Jessica and I’m a college student studying Marine Science with a focus on Biology and Ecology. I am the voice behind Of Books and Pen and I have a serious problem: an addiction to books and reading in general! This started when I was a kid when I was introduced to The Magic Tree House series, which ended up being my gateway drug to reading. Now I read tons of books instead of doing my Marine Science homework…
So what kind of books do I read? Almost everything. Action/Adventure, Romance, Comedy, Mystery, Thriller, Steampunk, Sci-fi, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, and Fairytale retellings, to name a few. If it has a gripping title, cover, or synopsis then I’ll read it. There’s not much that I won’t try, like food, though there’s no guarantee that I will like it! Not only do I review books but manga and other graphic novels as well.
Why do I blog and review books? A lot of my friends have gotten into blogging and long story short: I got bit by the blogging bug. I had a lot of hobbies to choose from, but I decided to write about my guilty pleasure and try to justify to my pockets why buying more books was necessary. I am not doing this for profit or anything other than enjoyment, because I love talking about books, and trust me I can talk. However, that doesn’t mean that I won’t graciously accept free books from the book faerie in the future…
If a book faerie is reading this, I’m willing to give an honest review for a free copy of the book (hardback, paperback, ebook, or audiobook). But let’s be clear, all of my reviews will be honest and fair whether I buy the book or get a free copy. If you do wish to send me books to review, I have to emphasize that I am a college student taking a lot of science classes, therefore the turnaround time will vary depending on the time of year. For guidelines on submitting books please head over to the Submission Policy Page.
Hi there! I’m Jill and I am currently a receptionist and a substitute music teacher working toward getting a full-time teaching job as an elementary or middle school chorus teacher. I am a friend of Jessica’s and a new voice behind Of Books and Pen! Part of why Jessica and I have clicked so well as friends is because we share the same addiction to all things reading and books. While I used to spend my class time reading, now I just read whenever I have down time between teaching, concerts, and lesson planning!
I read anything and everything! I’m always willing to at least try a new book, because several times in the past I’ve ended up really liking books I wanted nothing to do with (see my Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone review for a prime example!). When I was in high school I spent a lot more time in at my public library and would choose an aisle of the fiction section (adult or young adult) to walk down and grab a random book. Sometimes these where great! Sometimes they weren’t…
Why have I joined this blog? Honestly, because Jessica asked me. Whenever we get to hang out we spend so much of our time talking about the recent books that we’ve read, so when she asked if I would like to join her on the blog I was really excited. My best friendships have bonded over books, so I really love the opportunity to share my thoughts on the books I read with all of you. My deep, long-winded thoughts.
To the book faeries: Just like Jess, I am more than willing to give an honest review for a free copy of the book in any format, but understand that the free book doesn’t equal a good review. I will do my best to always be honest, fair, and constructive in any criticisms that I give. Please understand that I am currently working seven days a week and on the hunt for a full-time teaching job, so review times may vary. If you have a book you would like either of us to read and review, please head over to the Submission Policy Page for guidelines on submitting books.
